So I'm a pretty big fan of concerts, and I notice that they can be an important aspect of musical artists' careers. I'm no expert or analyst of them but I like to watch clips of concerts on TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram, and I sometimes come across videos or comments that compare the concerts of female and male artists. One particular point that often reoccurs is the difference in stage presence.
In general, women have a more diverse range of fashion and tend to change their looks (generally based on what's in trend) more frequently than men do. When at a fancy event, women are rarely seen wearing the exact same style and color of dress while men usually wear very similar-looking or the same design of suits. And to clarify, there's nothing bad about this difference, it's just what's normalized and preferred for both males and females. This is also often seen in concerts, especially with very popular artists, where female artists tend to have more unique and 'fancy' outfits/styles, as well as more organized and complex props and choreographies, while male artists tend to wear simpler clothing and are more casual or natural with their dances/movements. The artists I am including in this blog are mainly pop/rap singers.
Above are only two examples of recent concerts performed by male artists, but both had one (sort of) "costume" change, and it was just taking off an article of clothing. Their outfit choices are also ones that seem to be everyday casual wear-- t-shirts, hoodies, and jeans. Compared to most female concerts, Post Malone, Lil Uzi Vert, and a lot of other male artists are the only ones in their concerts performing as the center of attention (excluding their band, there are no backup dancers and such) and also have more non-choreographed dances or movements. They generalize with simplicity, mainly walking around and doing random actions while singing. In many of these types of male concerts, the artists are more interactive with the crowd.
Of course I had to add in The Eras Tour since it's the biggest concert of the year and there's a nice little trailer that shows all of her different outfits in one short video. Yes, Taylor Swift purposely has different outfits to match each of her ten eras, but they're all very uniquely designed and not just different colored t-shirts and pants. Dua Lipa, and other female artists, also have these stylish types of clothing in concerts and it even inspires fans to wear fancy costumes based on the artist's aesthetic. I notice that they also have at least one outfit that is very sparkly and jeweled, and we can't forget the fact that they perform in heels.
Furthermore, compared to what I mentioned earlier with the male concerts, these female artists have specific choreographed dances that they participate in and also include many other dancers performing with them. They also tend to have more complex lighting sequences, props, and more.
These videos are an example of how this difference in stage presence has been normal for quite some time. I also decided to use concerts of One Direction and Little Mix because I've seen this comparison a lot on social media (and for a little group/band representation). There definitely are a lot more crazy and elaborate visuals and lighting in the 1D concert than the male artist concerts that I showed before, but they still go with the simplistic clothing and movements.
To a lot of people, these differences are considered to be female vs. male expectations, where female artists are criticized for not being "talented enough" when performing more basic and simpler (like male artists). Although this may be true and contribute to the fact that female concerts are more extra, it's definitely worth it to the fans and all concerts are fun in general, having a main purpose of providing the fans a one-in-a-lifetime enjoyable and thrilling experience to see their favorite artists live!
Hi Ellie! I loved reading this! As someone who loves fashion, concert costumes has always been one of my favorite parts of watching artists I listen to go on tour. I never noticed this discrepancy in how men and women dress and I found it very fascinating to read you delve into. If you wanted to check out some more amazing tour outfits, one of my favorite singers Sabrina Carpenter wears outfits designed by Frolov, a Ukrainian designer, and they are absolutely stunning!
Hey Ellie! I loved learning about the fashion and costumes that men and women artists wear when on tour! I found it very interesting that Taylor Swift had different outfits to match each of her ten eras. I also thought that these differences were male vs. female expectations, so I am glad that I was able to learn more about this!
Hi Ellie, I never thought about fashion being a big part of what an artist can put out there to fans. But I do see that more women chose to me more fashionable while males are usually shirtless or casually dressed when performing. Maybe there should be a bigger change in the male fashion industry.
I found it very interesting on how males and females dress differently on stage. Have you always known this difference between males and female artists?
I never really noticed that male artists never really had a wardrobe change when they were on tour. I think that most female artists care a little more than male artists and try to get there fans more involved with the concert.
I loved how you talked about stage presence and what they tend to wear as wardrobe. I defiantly agree that women tend to dress way different than men with exceptions with some outliers like Elton John and Freddie Mercury.
For our last music blog, I wanted to learn about a music culture I wasn't familiar with. After some research, I became interested in Vietnamese music and narrowed my options down to ca trù music. Ca trù (literally translated as "tally card songs") is described as a genre of traditional musical storytelling or sung poetry. Originating in northern Vietnam, Ca trù dates back to the 11th century and is known to have flourished in the 15th century; however, no one knows exactly when it was founded. There are different myths and theories but o ne of the more popular ones associates c a trù's origins with a female musician named Đào Thị, who was very talented and a favorite of the Lý Dynasty imperial court. A ca trù band typically consists of three performers: a female vocalist and two male instrumentalists. Commonly, the female singer plays a phách, one of the instrumentalists plays a đàn đáy, and the other instrumentalist plays a...
About me! Hi everyone!! My name is Ellie Lim and I'm from Delaware, Ohio. I am currently a freshman at Converse University, where I am double-majoring in biology and psychology on a Pre-Med track and playing for the women's golf team. I am a first-born American in my Singaporean family and I'm a major travel girly. Today (9/2) is also my 18th birthday! My musical experience: I've played the piano since I was 5, but had to stop lessons earlier this year due to my moving to college. I love/loved my experience and connection with piano and hope to keep up the skill. I also played the violin for a few years in my school's orchestra and took private lessons for a year but lost interest in it after 8th grade. I'm definitely a big lover of music and would like to share my own opinions and taste of it! 1. Something I like right now: Recently, I've found myself enjoying K-pop music. I have a Spotify playlist that I continue to fill with songs I discover from social ...
So I assume most people have heard this fantastic piece by the very famous Aretha Franklin, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, but not everyone, including myself before this, knows that this piece is actually soul music . And what exactly is soul music? Well, let me tell you a little something (maybe more than a little something) about it! The origins of soul music began in the United States around the late 1950s, however, as an actual genre, soul music really emerged in the early 1960s due to the recruiting and support of Black artists from influential record labels. Roots of soul music lead back to traditional blues and gospel music of the Black church. African American musicians had been using the word "soul" to emphasize the feeling of being an African American in the United States. Characteristics of gospel music in the soul genre include song structure, a heavy backbeat, chord changes, and call-and-response vocals between a lead singer and a chorus. Sam Cook...
