Music & Me
About me!
Hi everyone!! My name is Ellie Lim and I'm from Delaware, Ohio. I am currently a freshman at Converse University, where I am double-majoring in biology and psychology on a Pre-Med track and playing for the women's golf team. I am a first-born American in my Singaporean family and I'm a major travel girly. Today (9/2) is also my 18th birthday!
My musical experience: I've played the piano since I was 5, but had to stop lessons earlier this year due to my moving to college. I love/loved my experience and connection with piano and hope to keep up the skill. I also played the violin for a few years in my school's orchestra and took private lessons for a year but lost interest in it after 8th grade.
I'm definitely a big lover of music and would like to share my own opinions and taste of it!
1. Something I like right now:
Recently, I've found myself enjoying K-pop music. I have a Spotify playlist that I continue to fill with songs I discover from social media or from the recommended songs based on the playlist. I tend to listen to K-pop a lot when driving; it's super upbeat, keeps me awake, and keeps my mood positive! I also like learning some of the dances. They are a part of what makes the songs super fun and enjoyable. My favorite K-pop group right now is NewJeans and my favorite song of theirs is Hurt.I really love this live version of Hurt:
I actually traveled to South Korea (along with Singapore and Japan) this past summer and it was such a fun experience! There were dance circles/groups everywhere, and the food, especially the pork, was delicious.
2. Music that is deeply important to me:
Taylor Swift.
Ever since elementary school, Taylor Swift and her music have always had a special place in my heart. I remember listening to her on my tiny pink iPod-- which I still have today-- and enjoying my favorite performances of Clean and Out Of The Woods at her 1989 World Tour in 2015. I love the variety of styles and music phases she's gone through and it was so cool to listen and visualize the differences between these phases all at once when attending the Eras Tour in Nashville last May.
Out Of The Woods is my favorite Taylor Swift Music video-- so amazingly scenic and the video's ending message was absolute perfection.
(p.s. 1989 Taylor's Version comes out October 27th!!!!)
3. Music I don't really connect with:
I am not the biggest fan of jazz music, mainly old-time jazz. It just isn't my cup of tea and I never really liked playing jazz pieces on the piano either; The syncopations in them are not my style. However, I do listen to lofi music at times, which has a combination of jazz and other music genres. Sometimes I would find playlists or long videos on YouTube containing lofi music to listen to when I'm studying, drawing, or when I just need some background music. Here's an example!
4. Extra: Music I listen to that is different from my normal playlists.
As mentioned before, I took piano lessons for many years and had to stop just this year. On top of playing it, I do enjoy listening to classical and piano/instrumental music. Classical music is just so peaceful and relaxing to listen to when studying or feeling stressed. One of my favorite tunes (very popular but definitely not overrated) is Chopin's Nocturne op.9 No.2. So much emotion is expressed with this classical piano song and I will never get bored of listening to it.
I also always pay attention to the music that is played in shows and movies, and there are so many great classical/piano pieces in a lot of them. Here is one that I discovered last week from watching the Japanese movie Drowning Love (Oboreru Knife):
I don't typically involve myself within a lot of K-Pop music, although the vocals in New Jeans - Hurt was really calming and serene to listen and dissect listening to. Genuinely enjoy this choice I give it a 8/10.
ReplyDeleteHi Ellie! Happy Belated Birthday! I actually really like the song hurt! I am not that much of a fam of K-pop but this song sounds very flowy and nice! I am also not a fan of old-time jazz. It is nice to listen to if doing homework, but it's not something I would chose to listen to if I wanted to just listen to music.
ReplyDeleteHey Ellie! I think its so cool that you play the piano! I used to dabble in k-pop haha and I really like Hurt! The vocals are beautifully and I fully agree that it is a fun and enjoyable song! I also love Out of the Woods! I not too into Taylor Swift anymore but my sister is a lifelong swiftie so any of her older music makes me super nostalgic for my childhood. I vividly remember the pop culture craze and speculation over this music video! Truly one of her most iconic works.
ReplyDeleteHey Ellie. I also really enjoy listening to classical piano instrumentals, especially when I'm trying to concentrate in studying for my classes. I took piano lessons when I was a kid but I horrible at it and at this point I've forgotten everything that I learned.
ReplyDeleteEllie Lim- I definitely liked the variety of music that you put in your blog and I certainly enjoy listening to Chopin and Taylor Swift on occasion.
ReplyDeleteHey Ellie, I also like Taylor Swift and think that she is a huge music icon and has been for many years. Here 1989 album in my opinion was one of her most impactful albums that she has come out with.
ReplyDeleteHappy late birthday, Ellie! I hope you had fun in South Korea. I got the chance to stop at their airport this past summer as well, and everything in there was so nice, especially their restrooms. Taylor Swift and K-pop are both something I am able to tolerate. My brother loves K-Pop, so I am very familiar with a lot of songs from that genre.
